According to new research undertaken by Consumer Focus, almost half (48%) of consumers don't know what a smart meter is. Consumer Focus are running an online advice guide to promote the benefits of smart meters as the country prepares for a nationwide roll out.

Smart meters are digital gas and electricity meters that record a buildings usage and allow counsumers to better understand and manage the areas in which energy is being wasted. Due to the digitalisation of the meters suppliers are able to remotely read and report on usage, this will bring an end to estimated and inaccurate billing. 

The current plan is to have a full national roll out of smart meteres by 2019.

Zoe McLeod, Head of Smart and Sustainable Energy Markets at Consumer Focus said: ‘Many consumers don’t know anything about smart meters despite a nationwide roll-out ahead from 2014.
